Councilman Mathieu Eugene celebrated New York City Haitian Day at Brooklyn Museum on Oct. 21.

Earlier this month, the Flatbush politician commemorated Oct. 9 as Haitian Day at a flag raising ceremony in Manhattan. A few years ago, Eugene introduced legislation to designate the respective day in remembrance of Haitian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Savannah. He added that Haitians, and other immigrants groups have played a major role in where the city and country is today.

“New York city is great because of the contribution of all of us, and the United States is such a wonderful country because of the contributions of all of us, and of course, the contributions of Haitians to the United States,” said Eugene.

He said the broader Haitian-American community held the historic battle in high regard, as it marked one of the many chapters of history between the two nations, and added that Haitian Day stands to retain it in long-term memory.

“The day recognizes the significant contributions of Haitians to the foundation of the United States, and also serves as an opportunity for our community to reflect on the challenges we have faced this past year and how we can come together to support one another,” said Eugene.

Eugene also said through commemorative events, he hoped to inspire a new generation of Haitian pride, and that through similar programs the youth will be energized to strengthen the community.

“New York City Haitian Day is an occasion to educate current and future generations of Haitians about their heritage and what they can do to build a better future for their community,” said Eugene.
