CWI prez slammed over new West Indies head coach

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director, Enoch Lewis has slammed President Dave Cameron over the recent appointment of West Indies team head coach Englishman Richard Pybus.

Lewis, who is President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board (LICB), has accused Cameron of “hand-picking” the high performance director when he had not even applied for the position.

He described Cameron’s actions as “unfortunate, unacceptable and unethical” saying that Pybus appointment should be rescinded and negotiations begin with the previously board-approved choice of South African Nic Pothas, had broken down.

Lewis said Pothas has been offered half of what the most recent head coach, Stuart Law, had been given the role, and had argued for similar levels of compensation to his Australian counterpart.

He said “without authorization and input from the Board” subsequently negotiated and concluded a deal with Pybus — for higher compensation than had been offered to Pothas.

The LICB president said there is a major concern that “significant high cost” could result from the appointment of Pybus, adding that the associated costs were “unplanned and unbudgeted” and were unlikely to impact adversely on already frail Cricket West Indies finances.
