Defending champions Guyana Women pulled off a sensational, seven-run victory against the Windward Islands Women in the opening match of the T20 Blaze.
Chasing Guyana’s total of just 96 for five in their 20 overs, the Windward Islands seemed well on their way to victory. They were at 78-2 at the start of the 18th over, with batters Jannillea Glasgow and Afy Fletcher at the crease.
But in a dramatic turnaround during the final overs, the Windward Islands lost three wickets and could only add 11 more runs, ending their chase at 89 for five after their allotted 20 overs.
Glasgow top-scored with 41 off 59 balls. Fletcher added 33 off 36 balls. The pair shared a 59-run partnership for the third wicket, putting the Windward Islands in control after losing opener Ashlene Edward for five and Zaida James for one.
Windwards looked to have secured a comfortable victory as they required just 19 runs off the last 17 balls with eight wickets in hand. However, they then lost three quick wickets and managed only 89 for five from their 20 overs, allowing Guyana to steal an unlikely victory.
Earlier, Shabika Gajnabi hit the top score of 38 off 37 balls in Guyana’s paltry total after they were sent in to bat.
Munisar scored an unbeaten 17 from 20 balls, and Mandy Mangru made 16 off 26 balls, to be the only other batters to score in double figures for Guyana.
