Information released from the Office of Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, revealed that a telephone conversation took place on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, between Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Holness, who contacted the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to discuss ongoing cooperation between Jamaica and the United States.
Prime Minister Holness, during the conversation, welcomed the recent decision by the U.S. Department of State to upgrade the travel advisory for Jamaica from Level 3 to Level 2.
Noting that it is a positive development that reflects the country’s sustained improvements in public safety and security. The Prime Minister emphasized that the upgrade in travel is key to tourism, investor confidence, and exchanges between the two countries.
Secretary Rubio commended the government of Jamaica for its management of hurricane relief and recovery efforts. He recognized the rapid restoration of critical services across affected communities after the Category 5 impact from Hurricane Melissa.
They also discussed the magnitude and complexity of the reconstruction efforts that are still to be completed. This includes the need to build more robust infrastructure to support economic activity. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ willingness to support Jamaica’s reconstruction and resilience efforts through continued cooperation and partnership. This support may include private sector participation.
Prime Minister Holness further expressed appreciation to the government of the United States for its continued support throughout the relief and early recovery phase of the hurricane.
The Prime Minister highlighted Jamaica’s significant crime reduction in 2025 and outlined the government’s security strategy. Both Holness and Rubio reaffirmed their shared commitment to fighting drug and firearms trafficking, transnational organized crime, and emerging regional threats.
The Secretary of State highlighted Jamaica’s participation in Haiti’s gang suppression force. He emphasized Jamaica’s strong and reliable role and the importance of continuing this with the United States. This is especially important for security, energy, and economic development, and issues relating to immigration.
In conclusion, both agreed to maintain close engagement as Jamaica and the United States continue to strengthen their longstanding partnership in pursuit of shared democratic values and mutual prosperity.
