Defending champions Weymouth Football Club lost to Ellerton but managed to remain in the hunt for the 2018-2019 championship by trailing just one point behind the Zone One leader Blackbirds, while in Zone Two, Paradise hangs behind leader Empire making for a tight Premier League race.

At the end of a series of games over the weekend, Blackbirds topped Zone One with 12 points, barely above Weymouth’s 11; and Empire stood on 22 with Paradise breathing down their necks on 21.

With the four leading teams in the two zones hanging so close to each other, the groundwork is set for keen contest for the next three months of the Barbados Football Association’s Premier League championship, though others have enough time to challenge the frontrunners.

In spite of their high zone ranking Weymouth continues to look out-of-sorts suffering a fourth straight defeat when they lost a 3-2 thriller against Ellerton Sunday night at the Barbados Football Association’s Wildey, St. Michael AstroTurf.

The result of this feature match caused Ellerton to move to fourth place in Zone Two.

Four goals were netted in the first half, which saw Weymouth fighting to come from behind to equalise before the half-time whistle.

In the second 45 minutes of regulation time Weymouth however produced no answer to Ellerton’s goal scored five minutes after resumption of play.
