Trinidad and Tobago’s top athletes, Jereem Richards, Dylan Carter, and Nicholas Paul, are among six national standouts who have been awarded Olympic Scholarships by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) to aid in their preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Also included in the lineup are fellow scholarship recipients Leah Bertrand, Makaira Wallace, and Teniel Campbell, all of whom will benefit from the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Solidarity program — a global initiative that provides elite athletes with crucial financial and technical support ahead of the Games.
Five of the six awardees are Olympians who have represented Trinidad and Tobago at either the Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, or Paris 2024 Games. Two of the athletes are receiving Olympic Solidarity assistance for the first time.
The scholarships are fully funded by the IOC and cover access to world-class coaching, competition exposure, training environments, and sport science services, as well as travel and accommodation for qualifying events.
TTOC President Diane Henderson congratulated the athletes and said, “These scholarships reflect our commitment to creating the strongest possible pathway for Team TTO athletes on their journey to the Olympic Games.”
“We remain steadfast in our mission to support athletes holistically — on and off the field of play — so they can train, compete, and excel at the highest levels. This cohort represents exceptional talent and determination, and we are confident they will continue to inspire Trinidad and Tobago on the road to Los Angeles 2028.”
It was a collaborative exercise in picking the athletes. A release from TTOC stated, “The selection of scholarship recipients was completed in close consultation with their respective national sporting organizations to ensure alignment with Olympic
Solidarity criteria and to prioritize athletes demonstrating the highest performance potential and commitment to excellence.”
Since its establishment in 1992, numerous T&T athletes have benefited from the Olympic Solidarity program, including Machel Cedenio, Deon Lendore, Michelle-Lee Ahye, Jarrin Solomon, Nigel Paul, Michael Alexander, Njisane Phillip, and George Bovell III — many of whom went on to qualify for and medal on the world stage.
The TTOC extended congratulations to the six recipients, expressing confidence that their continued progress will strengthen Trinidad and Tobago’s presence at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, scheduled for July 14–30, 2028.
