Brooklyn Council Member Crystal Hudson gave Thanksgiving baskets to 1,300 families at St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf in Brooklyn on Saturday, Nov. 22, during her Fourth Annual Turkey Giveaway.
“One thousand three hundred – that’s the number of turkeys we gave to families in need this holiday season – an all-time office record,” said Hudson, representative for the 35th Council District in Brooklyn, in a message to constituents on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
“More than 100 of you showed up on a rainy Saturday morning to give back to your community,” added Hudson, whose grandmother hailed from Jamaica. “You helped us pack hundreds of bags with fresh produce, sides, and more.

“We gave out 1,300 turkeys over the past few days, including deliveries to other community organizations and to home-bound New Yorkers who couldn’t come out in person,” she continued. “And we helped screen attendees for benefits registration that could help them receive food assistance, healthcare, rent subsidies, reduced fare for public transit, and more.”

Hudson thanked all volunteers, as well as those who donated to the annual giveaway or assisted with registering guests for benefits, including but not limited to St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf, CUFFH, GrowNYC, Dean Crossfit, LiveOn NY, StartCare, EmblemHealth, Brooklyn Public Library, New Wave Dance, CABA, MTA, Healthplex, and NYC Department of Social Services.
“But many families need help year-round,” Hudson said. “If you or someone you know could use a little extra support this season, you can find a list of local food pantries and community fridges on our website.
“We hope you have a happy and restful Thanksgiving,” she added.
