Beacon Healthcare School
— Perseverance, Excellence, Success
Beacon Healthcare School, Inc., located at 1815 Avenue M, Brooklyn, NY 11230, is considered by many to be the leading Home Care School in Brooklyn. Strategically located in Midwood Brooklyn and bordered by Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, and Flatbush, Beacon attracts students from many countries and nationalities, reflecting the diversity of the population in Brooklyn and the larger New York community. From the moment you enter the building, you are greeted with a warm welcome by a member of the staff and a sense of peace that you are in the right place.
The 2500sq. foot campus has five class rooms, three laboratories for patient care, and a resource/computer room where students can spend their spare time leisurely reading medical literature, motivational texts, novels by Alex Cross, or simply looking for a new recipe.
The administrative and certified instructional staff led by the dynamic director Deborah Anglin, RN, MSN is among the best one could find anywhere. Classes are such that there is never any over-crowding so that each student is given individual attention at all times. Students at Beacon are often reminded that Instructors want to know what they the students do not know, or understand, so that they could be helped overcoming any difficulty in understanding the material taught. The aim of course is for the student to leave with as much knowledge of the subject, as is possible. Instructors not only teach, but provide individual counseling and day-to-day assistance in a number of areas benefiting the students. Some classes may be very practical as in range of motion where students are encouraged to play music so patients can dance, or a “live TV” version of a cooking class in place of a lecture on nutrition. The student is seen as a whole spiritual being, a holistic individual, who is counseled on job preparation, career ladder paths, child care, relationships, cultural diversity, and much more.
Students are given every opportunity to pass both skills and written exams by taking advantage of group and individual tutoring. CNAs return after graduation for as much as 30 hours of computer and lab practice at no cost, in preparation for the NYS examination. They are helped until they understand, and are capable of passing their written and practical exams and tests. Beacon boasts between 95% -100% of its students passing both the CNA and PCT exams. .
At the end of training, students are asked to evaluate their experience at Beacon and the positive responses are overwhelming, as they speak of their pleasant experiences and the high quality of instruction they receive.
The staff emulates Beacon’s motto, “Perseverance, Excellence, Success.” Ms Anglin believes if you persevere you will excel, and if you excel, you will certainly succeed. It’s a motto she has lived by since arriving in the United States and became a Home Health Aide. She often reminds the students, that she was once sitting where they are. A few powerful words, that have left indelible impressions on the minds of some students seeking a path to higher learning. Words which have encouraged students, many returning to thank Ms. Anglin, or to say they have not forgotten what she said, while some return to upgrade to CNA, or volunteer to assist with tutoring at Beacon.
It is relatively very easy to register to attend the school. Anyone age 18 years or older with a valid I.D. may walk in between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm on any working day and register to be admitted in the next available class. Fees are within the budget of everyone in keeping with the present state of the economy.
Beacon is fully licensed by the New York State Education Department as a proprietary school, and is a member of the National Healthcare Association. The school is also a registered testing site for Home Health Aide (HHA), Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and National Healthcare Association (NHA) students.
Beacon collaborates with over thirty healthcare facilities including nursing homes, to hire students who graduate from beacon. Recruiting is done on site, which makes it easier for students to transition from graduation to employment, often times within a week.
Beacon is not only involved in training but has also been supportive of many charity projects in Haiti; shipping over $5,000 worth of medical equipment, supplies, clothes, and food, shortly after the recent earthquake in that country. Medical out-reach to Grenada in conjunction with the Grenada Nurses Association, Jamaica, and Guyana, and Barbados, providing education through soccer.
The future continues to glow for Beacon, with plans to establish training sites in Barbados and Puerto Rico, within the next five years.
