Braata Productions’ Golden Jubilee Fundraiser

New York-based non-profit group Braata Productions will hold its inaugural fundraising gala on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 6:00 pm at the Flatiron District’s Taj II Restaurant and Lounge. Organizers say the event, Braata’s first, is a fundraiser to assist the company prepare for its upcoming theatrical season, ‘Not About Eve,’ the award-winning play written by Jamaican Karl O’Brian Williams. The play was an A-List selection at the Readers’ Theatre Series at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2011.

Special awards will be presented to educator Dr. Una Clarke, the first Caribbean-born woman elected to the New York City legislature, and currently president of the Progressive Democrats Political Association; Stanley Dennis, chairman of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill’s franchise advisory board, and the Irie Jam Media Group for their stellar work within the Caribbean community over many years.

The evening will kick off with a reception and cocktail hour, followed by the presentation of awards to honorees.m It coincides with the celebration of Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence and will include a performance by the company, a silent auction and dancing with music provided by DJ Prentice.

“We congratulate the honorees and wish to thank those who have supported Braata Productions during the past year,” remarked Karlene Largie, chairman of the Braata board of directors. As we begin planning our programs for the coming year, we wish to encourage patrons to come out and help us achieve our fundraising goals, so we can continue our mission of preserving Caribbean folk culture in the New York tri-state area and beyond.”

Braata Productions, a non-profit arts organization based in New York City, was created to showcase and promote authentic Caribbean talent and culture. Upcoming projects include a Folk Singers performance season in October, and a Theater Workshop mainstage production of “Not About Eve” in November.
