The nine-year-old Carican Costumes is looking towards a “Bright Africa” as masqueraders display elegant, miniature and elaborate costumes this Labor Day.
Trinidadian costume designer and producer Pat Nurse told Caribbean Life that the portrayal “relates important parts of Africa.”
She said the four-section band comprises “Pyramids as great mysteries, Forests with rich land with birds, Beauties in the African Sky, [and] Zebras.”
Nurse — who founded the band in 1997 and is also the author of two books, including “Carnival Woman” — said one section of “Bright Africa” is for girls only, while the other sections are mixed.
She said each section comprises 20 masqueraders, with additional Queen, King and Characters, for a total of 92 masqueraders.
“From 2008 to 2015, we have always won a prize every year,” said Nurse, who has participated in the West Indian American Day Carnival Parade for over 15 years, adding that preparations are “great so far.
“We always have volunteers, parents and some of the children helping,” she added. “As usual, we have always given our children refreshments, balloons, whistles and toys along the [parade] route.”
Masqueraders will move to the beat of DJ Tolo, “who is an excellent DJ for all occasions,” Nurse said.
The mas camp is located at 547 Lincoln Pl. Brooklyn, between Franklin and Classon avenues.
