Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (D-Brooklyn) called on Guyanese to go out and vote, and to take along anyone registered to vote during her address at the Guyana’s Tri-State Alliance’s 25th Anniversary at Brooklyn Borough Hall recently.

“I want to remind you that you have an obligation to get out and vote, and if you want to know how you could be an influence between the United States and Guyana, know that it is exercising your franchise here in the United States, as many other immigrant communities have done, that make a difference between the U.S. and other nations from which they hail.”

“I want to urge you, and I want to beseech you. We can make a difference. I don’t want it to be said that I am always bragging about Caribbean people, and then you don’t show up to vote, and embarrass me,” quipped Clarke, adding, “I want everyone who has a vote, to go out and vote and take someone with you to the polls.”

The hugely popular politician, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, said she is honored to represent such a diverse district, and was full of praise for the expatriates, saying that Guyanese are an exceptional, and beautiful group of immigrants who she represents.

“Guyanese Americans embrace strong ties with their heritage. They hold many cultural events for members, and the strong ties between Guyana and the Untied States have allowed stronger ties with the Caribbean,” said the representative.

“It is an honor and privilege to represent you in Washington DC. It is just as wonderful to commemorate the growth and development of your nation,” she added.

Also honoring the Republic’s Independence Anniversary, Clarke said, “Guyana is 50 years old and going strong. You faced challenges, but be encouraged that your souvenir nation continues to grow from strength to strength. You have embraced the democratic values and you will continue to grow as a nation, unique in your own culture, and your talent to be proud of, and I am certainly proud to represent you,” she added.

“I brag and I boast, that I have one of the most extraordinary constituencies, and you add significantly to that ability to brag and boast,” added Congresswoman Clarke, a vocal opponent of issues that negatively affect the community in which she serves.
