Guyana’s 57th Anniversary of Independence flag raising for East Orange, NJ City Hall

Mayor of East Orange, Ted R. Green, and Assembly Woman, Britnee N. Timberlake representing the 34th Legislative District, East Orange City Council Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, in conjunction with the Guyana America Heritage Foundation, will commemorate Guyana’s 57th Anniversary of Independence with a Flag Raising Ceremony, at City Hall.

Dr. Terrence Blackman, tenured associate professor, Department of Mathematics, former dean of The School of Science, Health, and Technology at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, will be the keynote speaker on the June 9 celebration, that will showcase cultural pride, at 44 City Hall Plaza East Orange from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Several outstanding Guyanese as well as other nationals who have made an impact in society will be presented with awards.

A VIP meet and greet from 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall Chambers, will be followed by the flag raising ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

Lady Ira Lewis president of the Guyana America Heritage Foundation, said, “it has been our tradition to celebrate the Guyana National Flag Day honoring the colors of which our freedom is encapsulated.”

“June of each year is officially designated to commemorate such event. This is to give respect and reverence to our symbol of national sovereignty and solidarity. The Guyanese flag is the embodiment of all our country’s ideals, culture, and tradition,” she said.
