World champion Kirani James of Grenada won the men’s 400 meters in 45.96 seconds — the fastest in the world so far this year in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on Saturday night.
American Josh Scott was second in 46.54; 3, Renny Quow, Trinidad & Tobago, 46.70; 4, Tabarie Henry, Virgin Islands, 46.88; 5, Michael Tinsley, United States, 47.38 and 6, Johnny Dutch, United States, 48.86.
During the celebration of Grenada’s 38th anniversary of Independence on Saturday at the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, Prime Minister Tillman Thomas made the announcement of James’s victory and the audience reacted with great applause.
Thomas said at age 38, “we have gained the world’s attention and admiration as a world player in athletics, with two finalist and a 400M world champion in Kirani James. I can still recall our collective pride and spontaneous celebration. We applaud our athletes’ efforts and commend their success.”
James who became a world champion last year will be making a run for top honors at the 2012 London Olympics. He is also representing the Caribbean’s LIME telecommunications company.
LIME, the Caribbean’s largest cellphone provider, announced recently that James had signed a three-year deal to represent the company in the Caribbean.
