Beauty is only skin deep and this holds true for 19-year Vena Mookram, Miss World Guyana 2017. However, she is not only beautiful but she is passionate about a cause dear to her heart. She is on a crusade to save as many people as possible from becoming victims of diabetes, a disease that has taken the life of one grandmother and is now affecting another.

During a recent exclusive interview with Caribbean Life at Zen Lounge in Queens, the 5’ 7” tall beauty queen spoke passionately about using Diabetes Prevention as her ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ platform, when she competes at the Miss World 2017 Pageant on Nov. 18 in China.

The fitness enthusiast said beauty with a purpose measures how much you give back to your community, as such, she has conducted outreach programs in Essequibo and Berbice, and recorded public service announcements to promote healthy lifestyle and exercise, and to remind citizens of the dangers of diabetes.

“I encourage those affected, to take their insulin, and I tell others to get tested, stay on a healthy diet and get into a regimen of physical activity. This will go a long way,” said the pageant contestant.

“I take this personally, that is the reason my focus is on intervention.”

“I always thought pageantry was only about glitz and glamour but when I won the crown I realized how much hard work it takes to uphold the standards of Miss World Guyana,” said the graduate of Guyana’s top schools, Bishop’s High, and Queens College.

“It has been a wonderful opportunity so far. I am only 19 years old and to have learned so much in such a short time is phenomenal,” added Mookram, who completed the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), and plans to attend the University of Guyana to study business to follow in the footsteps of her parents who are entrepreneurs.

Mookram who has a twin sister and one brother, said she was always questioned about her lineage as to whether she was of mixed race, but she clarified that both of her parents are Indo-Guyanese, and so is she.

She is excited about representing Guyana among the multitude of beauties from around the world and will focus on the competition at hand. She loves to read, exercise and travel, and wants the world to know that not all beauty queens are “stuck-up.”

“I am the most humble person you could meet. I could be approached at any time for advise. I love people in general,” she noted.

The queen said her biggest challenge before entering the pageant was a lack of self-confidence and it was one of the reasons she entered the pageant in the first place. However, she quickly saw improvements in the way she carried herself and the way she approached people.

“Much more improvement is needed, but I am far ahead from where I was before,” she said.

The Miss World Guyana organization has set up a GoFundMe campaign. Mookram will benefit from this campaign since funds are needed to cover cost related to her wardrobe and competion pieces, inclusive of related training for the Miss World competition. www.gofundme.com/mwg2017
