Some of the keys to a winning team are playing good offense and defense, and focus on what’s ahead. Playing these positions are a must. Everyone must come together for a winning team and become a playoff contender. And it includes players who are not at the skill positions — the non-scorers. A player not in the latter category is Jet defender and safety Jaiquawn Jarrett, who is in his third year Gang Green.
Jarrett, who made headlines as a safety for two Public High School Athletic League champion Fort Hamilton Panther teams, is now battling for a starting position. Jarrett’s father, an electrician, comes from Jamaica.
Last year, Jarrett started for a career-high five times as a Jet and also made 40 tackles. He registered his first sack and interception in his career as well. The 6-foot,196-pounder first joined the Jets in 2013 and played his first two years primarily as a substitute. He impressed since that time, and is now battling for a starting job on a team that has many new players. Last year he even received Player of the Week honors on defense in the American Football Conference.
Last week, in is second game of this exhibition season, he helped the Jets toward a 30–22 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
The 25-year-old Jarrett, who wears uniform number 37, went to Temple University in Pennsylvania, where he competed on its team for four years. Prior to coming home to New York, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles where he saw action for one season.
He entered this current season with a new one year contract as a Jet. Last off season he worked very hard in Florida where he prepared for training camp. And he came into it in good shape ready to climb the ladder and be a starter.
“We are having a great training camp,” he said after the Atlanta game. “I’m excited about the regular season coming up. We have a lot of new players and a lot of rookies.”
