Caribbean Life’s senior writer Nelson A. King on Sunday, Oct. 9 honored his wife, Dofflyn King, and his sister, Clarice King-Richards, at a gala event in Brooklyn, celebrating his lifetime achievements.
King – who earlier this month was conferred a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree, with specialization in international business, by Northcentral University (NCU) in San Diego, CA – presented the awards before over 100 close friends, supporters, relatives, and community and political figures at Glen’s Terrace on Avenue N in Brooklyn.
King – who has over 35 years of local, regional and international broadcast and print journalism experience – credited his wife and sister, along with his late parents, Jack and Beryl King, of Chateaubelair, a town on mainland St. Vincent’s northwestern coast, among others, for his journalism, academic and other attainments.
In conferring the “Dedication and Support Award” on his wife of 17 years, King praised her for her “exemplary role as a loving and exceptional wife,” and for her “unconditional and remarkable assistance and support” throughout their marriage.
“May the Almighty continue to bless us, and may our love shine perpetually!” reads the plaque about the Kings, who worship at Fenimore Street United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.
King’s sister, who is two years and three months his senior, received the “Commitment and Devotion Award.”
“Presented to my dear sister, Clarice King-Richards, for your outstanding love, support and devotion in all times,” said King in reading the words on the plaque. “May the Almighty continue to bless you abundantly!”
King’s wife, a registered nurse, told patrons, to loud laughter, that she didn’t really need a plaque to know how much he loves and appreciates her.
“There’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t tell me how much he loves and appreciates me,” she said.
King-Richards – who served principally as the “home maker” in the King family in Chateaubelair, while their mother went to Kingstown, the Vincentian capital, in the mid-1970s so, Nelson, a then student at the elite St. Vincent and the Grenadines Grammar School, could complete his General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) O’Level subjects – said she loved her brother immensely and was grateful for the award.
“Thank you, brother, for this award,” she said. “I will treasure it for the rest of my life.”
