Cricket stars in the dark

Several West Indies cricket stars maybe overlooked for the Tri-Nation tournament in June following an announcement by the West Indies Cricket Board that only players who participated in the recent Regional Super50 would be eligible for selection.

Left-hand opener Chris Gayle, all-rounders Andre Fletcher and Darren Sammy, along with batsman Lendl Simmons all missed the Super50 series, which ended last month, due to their commitments with the Australian Big Bash.

All four players were part of the West Indies campaign last year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

WICB chief executive officer Michael Muirhead said only the “best available eligible players will be selected” for the upcoming series.

“The potential for this tournament is tremendous, and in keeping with the Board’s policy on selection, this pool of players will form the platform from which the West Indies One-Day International final team is selected for international and home series,” he said in a media release.’

West Indies are set to face South African and Australia in the Caribbean in June.

The WICB had warned recently that participation in the Regional Super50 would serve as the criteria for selection.
