Brooklyn Council Member Mathieu Eugene says he will be joined by elected officials, school administrators, and clergy members on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 10 am, outside his District Office (900 Rogers Ave.) for the launch of “District 40 Cares.”
Eugene said the collaboration is a relief effort that will provide critical supplies to those affected by the devastation caused by hurricanes the Caribbean and the earthquake in Mexico.
The collection will be conducted in partnership with Middle School 2, Public School 92, Public School 249, Public School 397, Public School 139, Ditmas Junior High School, Kings County Hospital, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and Maimonides Medical Center, said Eugene, who represents the 40th Council District.
Eugene is asking members of the community to donate the following items at the District Office Community Room: Diapers, batteries, feminine hygiene products, first aid supplies, water, infant care items, flashlights, toothbrushes, and cleaning supplies.
“It has been painful to watch residents of Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Mexico cope with the horrific natural disasters of the past month,” he said. “We will never replace the lives that have been lost in these tragic circumstances, but we can lend assistance to help rebuild the homes and communities that have been destroyed.
“While there are significant relief efforts under way, we know that additional critical supplies will make a difference to those in need of assistance,” he added, recalling that when Haiti was struck by a “horrible earthquake in 2010, I was grateful to the community for the outpouring of support.
“It is only right that we come together again and help those who are now facing the same dire circumstances,” said the Haitian-born representative. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the many families suffering during these challenging times.”
