The street is in fashion.

Thousands of black fashion aficionados citywide showcased their personal styles at the fourth annual Essence Street Style Festival at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Sept. 9. The event featured dozens of fashion-related events, including a catwalk and some musical performances. As one of the premier shows for the fashion subculture with communities of color, it also gives a stage for the birth for new and emerging styles to come out during a time where fashion is in focus, said the live events director.

“The Essence Street Style Festival represents the brand’s longstanding history with fashion. It allows us to celebrate our own style and culture during the height of Fashion Week,” said Jovanca Maitland.

The yearly event also brings together celebrities and social media influencers for a day of honoring how street looks have inspired everyday fashion choices and high fashion.

Since 2014, Essence magazine has created a platform for black fashiongoers to present new trends. Macy’s partnered with the magazine and sponsored the festival, and they were thrilled to support the mission and see the creativity, said the department store’s senior coordinators.

“The event turnout was amazing. It’s about knowing your style and trust me these ladies — and men — had tons of style,” said Kristyn Doar-Page.
