Former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was honored on Saturday (Dec. 2, 2017) in the Bahamas with a “Women in Distinction” Award.

The award recognizes the Opposition Leader’s “leadership, outstanding involvement in the community and the positive and inspirational example that she set for women and young girls everywhere.”

The award waspresented at the Celebrating Women International’s 2017 awards presentation and gala reception at the Atlantic Paradise Island Resort, Nassau.

According to a statement from the Office of the Opposition Leader, the organizers of the event indicated that Persad-Bissessar was chosen because of her commitment she has shown throughout her professional life to working to improve the lives of people.

Other leaders who have received the “Women in Distinction” award include former Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, Governor General of Grenada Dame Cecile La Grenada, former President of the Central African Republic Catherine Samba-Panza; and Governor General of St Lucia Dame Calliopa Pearlette Lousiy.

Celebrating Women International is a non-profit organization which aims to mobilize and inspire women, across the globe.
