Guyanese organizations in the diaspora have told Caribbean Life that they will continue to pray for a speedy recovery of President of Guyana, Brigadier David Granger, who began receiving chemotherapy treatment on Nov. 14, in Cuba after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Claire A. Goring, cultural director of the Guyana Cultural Association, organizers of the Annual Folk Festival in Brooklyn, said President Granger’s inner strength will bring him though his illness and take him back home recharged and energized to continue to lead Guyana.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you as we wish you healing and a complete recovery. We pray that your inner strength will bring you through, and you will return home recharged and energized to continue to lead our country,” said Goring of the head-of-state, who went to Cuba on Oct. 30, upon his return from Trinidad where he had gone for his annual checkup.
This is the firt time President Granger Inc. has spent so much time out of the Republic since taking up office in 2015, all due to several health investigations he had to undergo, due to weight loss and lack of appetite.
President of the Guyana Tri-State Alliance, Patricia Langford Jordon asked God to heal the 73-year-old president by saying “Dear President David Granger: The Guyana Tri-State Alliance, Inc., executives and members and all Guyanese are praying for your healing. Lord Your Word speaks promises of healing and restoration and I glorify you for the miracles that you continue to perform.”
“Today I claim those promises. Your word says in Psalm 107:19.20 that when we call out to you the Eternal one you will give the order. I believe that there is no illness you cannot heal so I ask for your healing of a brave, courageous and good man, Brigadier David Arthur Granger, President of Guyana, and I say Heal him O Lord and he will be healed,” she said.
Dean of The School of Science, Health and Technology at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, Dr. Terrence Blackman in a Facebook post said, “Leadership matters, it matters profoundly. Our prayers, our thoughts and our expertise are with President, His Excellency Brigadier David Granger. I have been fortunate to meet him, and I have had a proper conversation with him.”
“President Granger is a man of genuine quality, a Guyanese of true distinction. I read on my most recent flight from Guyana, in its entirety, his book ‘The Green State: Environmental Security and Biodiversity in Guyana’ and I found it surprisingly bold, inspiring and visionary. It argues that protecting the Guiana Shield is Guyana’s responsibility to the world, and we, Guyanese must be a global exemplar of conservation and sustainable development. This is so to speak our deep destiny. It is a compelling vision of a Guyanese future. May the great mystery guide, heal, strengthen and protect you sir,” said Dr. Blackman.
President Granger, who has First Lady, Sandra Granger by his side, was scheduled to return to cast his vote in the Local Government Elections on Nov. 12, but canceled his return at the last minute.
In a statement dated Nov. 14, Ambassador of Guyana to the Republic of Cuba, Halim Majeed, said His Excellency, the president, wishes to express his deep gratitude to Guyanese in the homeland and in the Diaspora to the various prime ministers and presidents, to the CARICOM Diplomatic Caucus in Cuba, to the friends colleagues, and all those who sent their best wishes for the complete recovery and his speedy return to Guyana.
Above all, the president would like to publicly thank the president of the Republic of Cuba, the government of Cuba and the medical staff of CIMEQ for the especial care and attention, which he has received while in Havana. And indeed for the excellent facilities in which he is being accommodated.”
