Scholarship grants totaling GYD$500,000 were bestowed on students attending the University of Guyana, thanks to the McGowan Foundation, a US based friends and family group, which recently presented the bursaries at a reception in Georgetown, Guyana.

“We are also pleased to bestow a one-time tuition grant of $200,000 GYD to Mr. Daniel McAlmont. Three additional one-time grants of $100,000 GYD were awarded to Ms. Zoe Sills, Ms. Ruth Waddell, and Ms. Danielle Braithwaite,” said a release.

The McGowan Foundation said it was pleased to announce Mr. Laurel Seales, a third-year student at the University of Guyana as the recipient of the 2022 McGowan Scholarship Award. Mr. Seales is pursuing a bachelor’s degree, in Youth and Community Development and is actively engaged in several activities and recognizes the importance of volunteerism.

The scholarship initiative initially launched in 2021 aims to provide a matriculated student at the University of Guyana up to $1 million GYD in tuition assistance towards a four-year degree. The deserving student must show a commitment to volunteerism, community service and development.

The recipients of the McGowan Foundation Scholarship must complete 25 hours of community service each semester for the duration of the award.

The McGowan Foundation Scholarship is funded by the generous donations of family members, friends and from the proceeds of an annual fundraising event.

The second annual Awards Ceremony and Dinner was held March 10, at Herdmanston Lodge in Georgetown, Guyana.
