In solidarity with the community of Sanford, Florida, Councilman Charles Barron, State Assemblywoman Inez Barron, the family of Ramarley Graham, the family of Jateik Reed, The Freedom Party, other elected officials and community groups denounce the killing of Trayvon Martin, along with the killing of Ramarley Graham, and the brutal beating of Jateik Reed.
The local officials held a press conference and rally on Monday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. on the steps of City Hall to denounce the recent killing of Trayvon Martin.
As a show of solidarity and support they held this rally at the same time that elected officials and church leaders held a rally on the steps of City Hall in Sanford, Fl. They gathered to denounce the killing of Trayvon Martin and call for the Justice Department to conduct a thorough investigation and for the Seminole Police Department to arrest George Zimmerman.
George Zimmerman is accused of killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26 while he walked through a gated community in Sanford after buying Skittles and a can of Iced Tea from the local 7-Eleven.
Ramarley Graham was killed on Feb. 2 by NYPD officers in the bathroom of his parent’s Bronx apartment in front of his grandmother and six-year-old brother. Police did not have a search warrant and the 18-year-old was unarmed. Critics have challenged aggressive police tactics including beating of Jateik Reed by the police, Commissioner Raymond Kelly’s stop and frisk policy and called for the Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson to submit evidence to a grand jury for criminal charges against the officers.
Councilman Barron declared, “This madness must stop. We have a God given, constitutional, human right to move about safely and freely in our communities. These cold blooded killers must be brought to justice. The families of Ramarley Graham and Trayvon Martin call for justice in the unjust killing of their sons.”
