Twenty20 for Sir Garfield

Several local, regional and international past and present cricketing celebrities will take their place among some of the game’s most prolific players, who will compete in a Twenty20 match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados this month in honor of the world’s greatest cricketer, Sir Garfield Sobers as he approaches another milestone — his 80th birthday.

In a press release issued by the organizers of the event, it said Sir Garfield Sobers’ contribution to the great game has long cemented his place in history’s page; surpassed only by his humility and passionate efforts to promote West Indies cricket to the ends of the earth.

Fans from around the world are expected to converge on the island of Barbados for his momentous occasion dubbed “Sir Gary: 80 Not Out Season Celebration” running from July 3 to Sunday, July 31.

The Twenty20 match will bring together cricket celebrities including Brian Lara, Carl Hooper, the legendary duo Courtney Walsh and Sir Curtly Ambrose, former England player, Freddie Flintoff, India’s Ravi Shastri and Pakistan’s Rashid Latiff.

Barbadian cricketing heroes Collis King, Sherwin Campbell and Philo Wallace will also take their place among some of the game’s most prolific players, who will compete as the Sir Garfield Sobers Masters team managed by the legendary Clive Lloyd, according to the news release.

They will go up against a youthful squad of all-stars managed by Sir Vivian Richards on July 28 at Kensington Oval.

Sir Garfield remains active as an ambassador for Barbados and cricket, using his celebrity status to attract numerous sporting opportunities to the island and providing the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., states the news release.
