West Indies suffered an embarrassing defeat in the historic day / night Test against England by an innings and 209 runs in three days at Birmingham, London on Saturday, Aug. 19.
The regional team facing a massive task of overtaking England’s imposing 514 for 8 declared was bundled out for 169 in their first innings despite an aggressive unbeaten 79 from Jermaine Blackwood.
The Windies were asked to follow on by 364 runs, but they were bowled out for a paltry 137 in their second innings, with only opener Kraigg Brathwaite showing some resistance against the English bowlers with a top score of 40.
The defeat left West Indies trailing 1-0 in the three-Test series. The loss was the sixth heaviest ever for the Windies in its once-proud Test history.
Resuming at 44 for 1 in their first innings, they were all out after lunch on the second day.
England bowled West Indies out twice in less than 100 overs, taking 19 wickets in a day to win the match. It was also the first time a pink ball was used.
Opener Alastair Cook scored a fourth double century (243) and passed 11,500 runs in England’s innings.
Joe Root’s 136 saw him become just the sixth man to make a half century in 11 straight Tests.
And fast bowler Stuart Broad overtook Ian Bootham to become England’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 384. His spell (3 for 34) under floodlights near the end claimed three wickets for four runs in 11 balls — including two wickets in two deliveries. West Indies has not won a Test in England since 2000. They lost their last four series in England 4-0, 3-0, 2-0 and 2-0.
