Brooklyn Democratic Party leader Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn wants the US Senate to convict former President Donald J. Trump and prevent him from ever holding office again.

Bichotte, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn, on Wednesday praised the Senate for voting that it is constitutional to try Trump for incitement of insurrection and violence against the United States government, saying he should be punished to the fullest extent for his actions.

“How can you view the tape and see the anguish Trump caused and not understand what the former president is guilty of?” queried Bichotte Hermelyn in response to the graphic video that was presented at the trial on

“Trump’s divisive, hateful speech directly led to the attempted coup of our government, extraordinary acts of domestic terrorism and five deaths,” she said. “The people have, thankfully, replaced Trump with the Biden administration, but the former perpetrator-in-chief must be held accountable for his actions.

“This abhorrent attack on our democracy must be punished,” Bichotte Hermelyn added. “We need to show the world that we’ll never tolerate this divisive hatred again.

“I thank our Senate Majority Leader, Brooklyn’s own, Sen. Chuck Schumer, as well as the impeachment managers for their leadership in holding the former president accountable for his actions, which have stained our standing in the world,” she continued. “We need to unite against hatred now more than ever.

“I urge all Senators from both sides of the aisle to serve fairly as the jury of America,” she said. “The Senate’s decision must reflect that we’re in a new era that does not tolerate hate.”
