Fly Jamaica starts non-stop JFK / Geo service Feb. 21

Guyanese Jamaican carrier, Fly Jamaica Airways will commence its non-stop flights from John F. Kennedy Airport to Cheddi Jagan Airport beginning on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The airline management, which waited more than two years to be approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation for the direct route, made the announcement recently to overjoyed Guyanese passengers, who were forced to travel three hours to Jamaica, for a connecting flight to New York.

The carrier, operated by Guyanese-born Captain Ronald Reece and Manager Roxanne Reece, celebrated its second anniversary last month with a celebration in Queens to thank loyal customers, travel agents and special guests.

Fly Jamaica, which now has routes to Canada, plans to expand to other countries around the world.

In a recent interview with Caribbean Life, Captain Reece had indicated that he was hopeful that the application would be approved in the very near future.

The flights will depart from JFK’s Terminal 1 at 9:00 a.m. and arrive in Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. The airline is offering a special one-way fare costing $199.00 to celebrate Guyana’s 45th Anniversary and Mashramani costume parade.

The airline will allow passengers two pieces of luggage at 50 pounds each and a carry-on weighing less that 22 pounds.

Reece, who also operates Wings Aviation, a local charter service in Guyana, recently unveiled its newly acquired Boeing 767 wide-bodied aircraft that accommodates 245 passengers.

The fleet, said Captain Reece, is not subsidized by any government or country and has not been receiving any subsidies like some other airlines that ply the Caribbean. The planes are owned and operated by the group.
