His Excellency George Talbot said that the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Guyana to the United Nations had a momentous year, and praised staff members for working beyond the call of duty with expectations that were beyond the capacity of the Guyana government.
Tabot made these remarks at a Dec. 16, Christmas luncheon at the diplomatic office in New York City, during a welcome of his Caricom counterparts, United Nations staff and Guyanese citizens.
“I want to salute the staff who have equated themselves well and have commanded the respect of their peers and superiors in their work, and have the full appreciation and acknowledgement of the government and recognition of the people of Guyana, said Talbot.
The gracious host, who, along with staff members provided festive Guyanese fare, and steel music by pannist Patrick Davis praised members of CARICOM, stating that the Caribbean nationals are family.
“We understand the value of partnership, of collaboration, of coalition,” said Talbot, adding “without our Caricom family we would not be able to achieve much of what we do individually as member states.
“I acknowledge and appreciate our Caricom colleagues who are here. They have provided a source of strength, a source of encouragement and a source of inspiration intellectually, and many assets that we have been able to draw on and make our way into these United Nations.”
“Without our Caricom family we would have a harder task making a difference,” said the diplomat.
“I want to also recognize our Guyanese community in the United Nations and Caricom nations who continue to shine and keep the flag flying high,”were the words expressed by Talbot who drew from the
experience of the author of To Sir With Love, Guyanese-born E. R. Braithwaite, who asked a Ghanaian about his country.
The response was, “I am Ghana, of which Talbot reminded the nationals that they all represent their individual country.
“Each of us represents our country. Each of us is Guyanese, Bahamian, Jamaican, Antiguan Trinidadian, Barbadian, because each of us say something to the world about our countries. Our aim is always to represent our country to the best of our ability.”
