Guyana Cultural Association awards nominations open until June 30

Brooklyn-based Guyana Cultural Association (GCA), organizers of the Annual Folk Festival Awards, is calling for nominations to honor persons who have made outstanding contributions in their community, to celebrate its 2024 ceremony.

Co-chairs, Ave Brewster-Haynes and Verna Walcott-White, told Caribbean Life recently that the ceremony, set to take place during a weekend of events in September, will present awards in various categories including the GCA Award, Exemplary Award, Cultural Award, Cultural Enabler Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

“It’s your chance to join us in honoring the best among us to celebrate our cultural heritage and more in 2024.”

“We request nominations of accomplishments that demonstrate actions of the best of us in the homeland and the Diaspora. Nominations can be for a person or entity whose work exemplifies the spirit of hope, harmony, and continuity,” said the committee members.

A selection committee will evaluate each nomination considering, Scope, Impact /Influence, Integration, Pioneering Spirit, Challenges and Achievements.

The awards ceremony, celebrating its 22nd Anniversary, will also present the Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism. This special award will salute writers whose published works promote understanding and appreciation of the diverse strands of Guyanese heritage and contribute to celebrating the commonalities that connect the people of Guyana.

Celebrating Hope, Harmony, Continuity as its theme, the festival awards will also present the Derry Etkins Memorial Prizes to persons who have excelled in musical Composition, Performance, Preservation, as well as Service and Commitment to creative, impactful, and sustainable music education programs focused on community engagement, and innovation.
