Selwin Thomas doesn’t know much about basketball, but he still tries to help his son Terrence Samuel as much as possible by giving him off the court pointers.
Thomas originally comes from Grenada, where cricket was the main sport. Samuel is a senior guard on the basketball team at South Shore High School in Brooklyn.
“Selwin would tell me to go out there (on the court) and play with passion,” Samuel said. “When Selwin played cricket he would play with passion. My father played cricket just for the fun of it. He was a math teacher in Grenada. When he came to New York he didn’t teach any more.”
Samuel recently concluded his senior year on South Shore’s basketball team. When he took part in the Jordan Brand Basketball Classic all-star game for the Regional team. He was on the ‘white’ squad.

The 6’3” guard turned in an outstanding career at South Shore when he led them to two straight Public Schools Athletic League Class ‘AA’ quarter final round spots during his sophomore and junior seasons. But academics always came before basketball and academics qualified him for a spot in college.
Samuel’s play during his high school days enabled him to continue his roundball sport at Big East member UConn, thus staying close to ‘home.’ Samuel is a ‘big’ guard that is at his best when he’s attacking the basket.
Samuel scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 15 minutes and helped to pace his White team to a 114-102 victory over the Black team in the second of the three games in the Classic of high school players at the Barclays Center last Saturday.
