Will most of the players on the current roster of the New York Mets come back next year to a team that finished the season on a high note even thought they failed to make the playoffs? That is a big question as of now. Of course, Terry Collins will return as manager for his second and third years.
The main concern is the short stop position in Jose Reyes, whose playing contract is about to expire as he is signed through 2011.
Collins is very prepared if the outstanding hitter and base stealer goes to another club.
Ruben Tejada will move top short stop and Justin Turner will be the starting second baseman. Everybody wants Reyes to return and with him back at short stop it gives the Mets a solid and more decent infield, both defensively and offensively. David Wright at third base will return and Ike Davis will assume his first base job. Davis missed most of the season with a left ankle sprain and a bruise to his bones.
Davis and Tejada completed their second years in Met uniforms. Davis is 24 years of age and Tejada is 21. Tejada played very well after his recall in August and accumulated impressive figures. They are still young with a lot of potential.
The big question mark is Reyes, a native of the Dominican Republic, who has tremendous speed. But it has gone down as of late.
The outfield is solid, but Angel Pagan‘s batting average also slipped from the previous year from .290 to .262. Pagan is from Puerto Rico and Tejada is from Panama.
These are some of the holes the Mets must fill as there could be some problems both at the plate and on defense. There is some talented young players waiting to crack the major league team on a full-time basis.
