A showstopping runway event last Saturday to kick-off Brooklyn Fashion Week 2024 at Kings Plaza shopping mall garnered loud applause during the fashion forward show of excellence that displayed collections by a dozen designers who welcomed the spring season, with vibrant hues, and pizzazz.
The little ladies ruled the catwalk, strutting their stuff in trendy ready-to-wear ensembles created with elegant, playful, and cutting-edge technique, while young men and women, twins, and mommy and me, set the tone for an afternoon of fashion genius.
Former supermodel Kamala Millwood, president of Palatial Publishing, and host of the show, delivered exciting commentary, noting how beautiful the couturier presentation was, as designers rocked the runway with a steady stream of regalia.
Tanesha, a trending superstar model, and face of the Kings Plaza campaign, opened the show, wearing a beige pant suit, covered with a metallic floor-length leather coat, as she strutted the catwalk to introduce Black Knowledge Wear, the first designer of the afternoon.
Robert Scott’s robust urban wear for men and women such as a Bob Marly Tee, shirts that honor black music legends, and a multi-colored body-hugging dress, wowed fans, who watched on in awe, as Str8 Drop wear, followed with inner-city outerwear in silver, colorful children’s wear, and separates.
Jazzing up the catwalk was Asphalt, a frisky comfortable children’s line of shorts, tight-fitting jeans, sweats, and stamped Tees. This set the stage for Windsor, an elegant collection of floor-length evening wear. Most noticeable, were a sequin gown, a mini strapless leather frock, and a denim skirt with a thigh-high split, complete with a leather jacket and printed Tee.
Macy’s spring clothing included children, male and female separates, in vibrant colors, white outfits, and denim, accessorized with handbag, and stylish footwear.
Qumora, by former KP runway model, showed a playful children clothing cut from African print. Others in metallic, color-blocking, pairings, a mid-riff outfit, and embroidered jeans, jazzed up the collection.
Raven’s pretty neon pink, green, and tan ensembles, trimmed with glittery ornamentation, and paired with white shirts, entertained the crowd, that also applauded Styles by Sinnamon, a stunning ball gown collection in an array of colors.
Tashii Couture brought the audience to its feet, with a bold, beautiful, and mesmerizing collection of Neon green outfits, trimmed with feathers, butterflies, and translucent fabric. A peach lace shawl, paired with a neon green fishnet skirt, highlighted the spring collection.
Black Girls Sew, showed casual cotton outfits, while Shivenze Fashion, a line of children, and adult outfits made use of mixed media African print, also designed in outfits for men and boys.
Young Gods glammed the center stage with dazzling sequin dresses, pantsuits, and fanciful get ups, that had the “teens and tweens” shaking their fashion style, to close out the afternoon of fun and fashion.
Dawn Simon, area senior manager of marketing of Kings Plaza Mall, told Caribbean Life that this is the ninth Spring couture partnership with the shopping center and Brooklyn Fashion Week.
She said it’s a great way for “us to recognize models in the community, develop a deeper partnership with Brooklyn Fashion Week, and to invite the general public to Kings Plaza to see the fabulous wears from our retailers.”
An April 27, Earth Day recycled show she said, will give residents an opportunity to create runway outfits, using recyclables, or sustainable material during a period of one hour.
“We tell people about the importance of saving the earth, planting trees, all while getting an opportunity to connect with designers, stylists, and creatives,” she said. All events are listed on Kings Plaza social media platforms @kingsplazamall.
