In honoring the spirit of Juneteenth, the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute’s Sou Sou! Saturdays family program was launched in Harlem on Saturday, June 4.

The center said in a statement that it commemorates Juneteenth and “the spirit of those ancestors who longed for and learned of their freedom on June 19, 1985.

“This Sou Sou! Saturdays program will honor not only Black Liberation but also Black futures,” it said.

On Saturday, the center said families with children of all ages engaged the mobile bookstore, Bronx Bound Books, and its curated selection of books by Black and Brown authors.

Families also experienced Liberation through Movement, a dance workshop led by VashtiDance Theatre, and learned the fundamentals of creating ancestral instruments like the rain stick with teaching artist Sandra Bell.

The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute is located at 120 E, 125th St. in Harlem.

The center can be reached by calling 551-358-3002.
