Sybilla Daniel-Douglas was born in London of Caribbean parents; her mother is from St. Lucia and her father is from Antigua.

Being drawn to nursing has been a blessing for her. She says, “As a child, I had a passion for helping people, especially the sick and elderly, and it was my mother who advised me to become a nurse. I took her advice and never regretted one moment.”

Ms. Douglas has 29 years in the healthcare field, a Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing with an emphasis on education. She works as a registered nurse and asthma educator at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Brookdale Family Care Center on Linden Avenue.

She uses simple terminology and pictures to explain to parents the difference in medications and the importance of the daily protocol even when the child is well.

“It’s important for them to understand the role of daily-inhaled corticosteroids in the management of persistent asthma,” she explains, of the challenges at times to get parents of pediatric asthma patients to understand the importance of certain treatments.

“They are so grateful.” And, a reply that she gets most of the time is “no one ever told me that, no one ever explained it to me that way before.”

For the last eight years, Ms. Daniel-Douglas also has been a clinical instructor, an adjunct assistant professor for nursing fundamentals and psychiatric nursing in the Medgar Evers College Nursing Program. She is equally engaged with her eager-to-learn students where she provides supervision and assistance to students in a clinical setting.

She says, “I am a firm believer that good habits start early and if you teach the students well from the very beginning, they will carry these good practices with them forever.”
