The St. Marks Avenue Independent Block Association’s third Annual Block Festival on Saturday, June 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The festival will be held on St. Marks Avenue between Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues, across from the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
It will include free food, dance, arts projects, portrait sketches, gardening, a simultaneous chess exhibition and more. Local community groups and businesses have sponsored what will be a fabulously fun and free day of activities for children, teens, adults and seniors.
For the first time, the festival will feature simultaneous chess exhibitions in which United States National Chess Master Eric Fleischman will play simultaneously against several chess players from the gathered throng of festival-goers.
The activity will continue throughout the day (2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.), based on the number of players who are willing to try their talents against this chess master. As ICL Director of Community Relations and Marketing, Fleischman is interested in promoting chess to ICL consumers, residents and community members who are interested in learning how to play, improving their game, participating in chess tournaments or just socializing with other chess players.
This is a true old-time neighborhood event made possible through the collaborative efforts of The St. Marks Avenue Independent Block Association, The Institute for Community Living (ICL), Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Culture Skateboards and PS 289 George V. Bower Public School.
Proceeds from Stoop Sales organized by neighbors will be used to beautify the St. Marks block. Over the last two years, funds have helped in the purchasing of old-fashioned street lighting.
The Gardening Project, with its array of flowering plants, will enhance the lush gardened courtyard behind the Institute for Community Living St. Marks Residence, reinforcing the concept that communities, like gardens, are most beautiful when there are a variety of inhabitants thriving together.
