Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L Adams, on Feb. 21, honored Guyana with a proclamation that saluted the country’s 50th Republic Anniversary, and applauded the nation for its relation with Cuba, and being the only English-speaking country in South America with African, Chinese, Amerindian, Indian, Portuguese, and European natives.

Ama Dwimoh, special counsel at Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams, presented the proclamation, which reminded that Guyana became a republic on Feb. 23, 1970, and boasts the best eco-tourism destination in the world.

Consul General of Guyana to New York, Barbara Atherly and Guyana’s Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, Ambassador Rudolph M. Ten-Pow, during a cocktail reception, in the dining room of Medgar Edgar College, accepted the decree.

The diplomats also accepted a declaration from Congresswoman, Yvette D. Clarke, presented by Patricia Jordan-Langford that hailed Guyanese in Brooklyn as progressive people, who continue to make a great impact in the borough.

Angela Chambers, on behalf of the office of Brooklyn District Attorney, Eric Gonzalez, presented a citation to the diplomats, thanking Guyanese for their inspiring contributions, which have made New York great.

This, was followed by a plaque that read, to the government of the Republic of Guyana for 50 years as ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny,’ from GraceKennedy Money Services, and Western Union, handed over by Garfield Comrie, GraceKennedy Caribbean marketing consultant N.E. USA, before a celebratory cutting of Cake designed with the colors of Guyana’s Golden Arrowhead flag by the diplomats.

Consul General Hon. Barbara Atherly and Ambassador Rudolph M. Ten-Pow, both reminded Guyanese of Guyana’s accomplishments, and its exciting future, during the 50th Commemoration reception, entertained by Kevin Lowe’s Steel Pan and Dee Jay music.

Ashley Chambers delivered a memorable rendition of Oh Beautiful Guyana, before Dr. Una Clarke expressed her love for the Guyanese community, and extended best wished to nationals.

Thanks to fashion designer, Roger Gary, the decor truly represented the vibrancy of the Guyanese culture, while artist, Derek Browne’s art exhibition at the entrance, beautifully captured Guyana’s landscape, and flora and fauna.

The Consulate of Guyana, the Guyana Mission to the United Nations, and the Guyanese in the Diaspora Inc. hosted the event. Jonathan Locke was the emcee.
