The rich, colorful traditions of the masquerade band, folklore and Guyanese food will take center stage when the Queens College of Guyana Alumni Association NY, hosts its annual Christmas soiree on Friday, Dec. 18.

Titled, “Flounce” a Guyanese dance movement that showcases merriment, patrons will take over the floor of Brooklyn’s St. Gabriel Episcopal Church Hall at 331 Hawthorn St., from 9 pm to 3 am for a festive evening of nostalgia and exuberance.

The event planners, Patrick Stephens and Treasurer Saran Nurse whose brilliant idea it was to celebrate the Guyanese culture at the Christmas event, are calling on patrons to “come and bounce at the QC Flounce.”

Chronicle Atlantic Symphony, which has been a main staple of Guyana’s cultural heritage, will bring Christmas cheer steel pan style to the shindig, while popular Deejay Flex, will add his touch of golden oldies to the event which will take Guyanese down memory lane.

Drummers Jaggae and Akoya, along with saxophonist, Flantis, will then evoke the spirit of the masquerade dance which originated from African slaves who celebrated during the European religious Christmas season under British rule.

With its focus set on Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary in May 2016, the Alumni planning committee considered the jubilee and decided to explore the idea of adding some elements of Guyanese culture to this year’s Christmas party.

According to Stephens, the team then consulted with QC alumnus and president of the Guyana Cultural Association Dr. Vibert Cambridge, who proposed FLOUNCE! that expresses the colorful and joyful animated spirit of Christmas in Guyana.

A traditional Guyanese Christmas cuisine, with mauby, sorrel, ginger beer and black cake, will be served to give patrons the true feeling of a nostalgic Christmas.

A $40.00 donation covers appetizers and a traditional Guyanese Christmas dinner. Tickets are only being sold on the QC website: https://qcguyanaalumny.givezooks.com/events/flounce-a-guyanese-christmas-holiday-party

In addition, the alumni will accept donations to help QCAANY sponsor projects such as the highly successful series of Students Conference which were held in Guyana in 2014 and 2015.
