The sons of Grenada’s first female calypso monarch, Cynthia Ogiste a.k.a. Lady Cinty, Kellon and Kelson Ogiste, a.k.a. Luni Spark and Electrify, have already established themselves as the energy kings of soca with a Grenadian accent.
The brothers, began competing in soca monarch competitions separately until their first major performance as a duo at the National Groovy Monarch Competition in Grenada during Spice Mass 2006, with their hit single “Miss de Mass.”
Although that tune did not give them the crown in Grenada, it solidly earned them winning fame in the wider Diaspora, as they garnered the top spot in the New York City Groovy Monarch of the same year.
In 2007, Luni Spark and Electrify were crowned as the first duo in history to be kings of Grenada’s Soca Monarch with the song entitled “High.” “High” which kept soca revellers jumping throughout the carnival season, along with their other hits, “Coming Back,” “Somebody Say,” and “Home Sweet Home.”
The following year, they again won the title with their crowd-pleaser, “Clear The Way,” making them Grenada’s unbeaten Soca Monarchs for two years back-to-back.
The duo also went on to perform as finalists in Trinidad and Tobago’s 2008 and 2009 International Soca Monarch Competitions and have captured International Soca Awards for Best Uptempo Collaboration and Best Duo of the Year in 2009.
This year the duo also placed second in Grenada’s hotly contested Groovy Soca Monarch and third in the Power Soca Monarch competitions — the only artistes to simultaneously place in the top three of these two major events.
In acknowledgement of their focus and value for the promotion of positive behavior among youths, the duo was nominated in 2010 to attend a regional Youth Symposium in Jamaica, which was organized by the Bob Marley and Rita Marley Foundation.
Additionally, it was also during 2010 that they became the first entertainers to embark on a creative, content-rich, music-and-dance-driven campaign against violence in the secondary schools of Grenada. This campaign, known as the “Youth Against Violence Campaign,” is approved by the Ministry of Education in Grenada and has drawn national recognition and attention for its positive and uplifting impacts on the lives of youths in Grenada.
Having completed a second successful series of the campaign in 2011, the duo are planning to take their positive initiative to other countries across the Caribbean.
Looking ahead, the future certainly looks bright for the duo. In fact, lovers of good music everywhere can prepare themselves for much more musical creations from the duo that are synonymous with their names. Their polished ability to fuse different genres of music together, coupled with their unique, interactive dance moves have placed these two artistes among the most versatile that the Caribbean has to offer international audiences.
Currently, the duo are exploring collaborations with other artistes from various genres and are focusing on their long-term goal of promoting and taking Grenada and Caribbean music deeper and further.
As they put it, “We bring new energy to positive vibes; we uplift the human spirit. We are about taking Grenada’s and the Caribbean’s music to the world as we function as cultural ambassadors. Nothing will stop us from doing our part in promoting and expressing our culture before audiences worldwide.”
